Hot Chocolate Porridge

So this chocolate porridge sounds like a treat but it’s actually pretty healthy. The smile on my kids faces, when I make this, always melts my heart. But really all that I use is cacao powder for the “chocolate hit”. Cocoa, or cacao powder, is a great store cupboard standby for chocolatey baking: chocolate contains caffeine so it is a great alternative. The mashed banana and cinnamon gives a natural sweetness. All the flavours of a comforting hot chocolate, but with your morning oats.

Makes 1 adult, or 2 small portions
1 year +

  • 40g normal porridge oats, or gluten free oats

  • 220-250ml organic milk, or non dairy

  • 1 ripe banana, peel and mash

  • 2 teaspoons cacao powder

  • pinch of ground cinnamon

Cook the oats and milk, once it starts to thicken and bubble you can add: mashed banana, cinnamon and cacao powder. Keep stirring until completely cooked.

Serve with berries for a bit of sharp sweetness, bear faces are a welcome addition, but optional.
